Caring for Your New Puppy

Ryan and Puppy

Now that you have your puppy, proper care will keep your puppy growing healthy and happy. Your new puppy needs love and positive reinforcement. For each time you correct a puppy, you should give several positive reinforcements.

Some of the things you need for you puppy are listed below.

  1. A trip to your veterinarian. Your puppy will come with up-to-date with vaccines, but you'll need to schedule a trip to your veterinarian for any required boosters and to discuss any additional recommondations for your puppy.

  2. A Good Quality Food. Your puppy is growing and needs good nutrition formulated for puppies. Small breeds should be ready for an adult food between 9 and 12 months. Royal Canin offers high quality food and is the brand we use for our own dogs.

  3. Start Potty Training. Make sure your puppy gets outside frequently and praise frequently when your puppy gets it right. Always take the puppy out as soon as you wake up and right before bedtime. Don't forget to get the puppy out right after eating or drinking. Keeping your puppy in a crate when not supervised, and then taken outside immediately after being let out of the crate is often an effective way to train.

  4. Teach Good Manners. Teach your puppy basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Make sure your puppy doesn't jump all over your guests. A puppy class may help.
